This collection features testimonies of witnesses and survivors of the Partition of India, which claimed the lives of more than a million Hindu, Muslims and Sikhs and triggered the largest forced displacement of people in recorded history.
These testimonies were painstakingly gathered by Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, Professor Emeritus at Stockholm University for his book The Punjab Bloodied, Partitioned and Cleansed (OUP, 2014). Dr. Ahmed generously donated his interviews to LUMS for digitization and curation. The testimonies featured on this website come from diverse backgrounds from both sides of the border.
We have uploaded the audio files, along with their detailed descriptions, for all interviews. A few interviews have complete transcriptions. We hope that these interviews allow our listeners to understand the experiences of those who suffered during Partition. That said, we recognize the limited nature of our contributions and we hope that these testimonies can contribute to a much larger conversation about Partition. We invite other researchers and interested individuals to contribute to this repository.
